Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana
The “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana” is a programme initiated by the Government of India (GOI) to encourage young students of the Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take up careers in research in these fields. The programme aims to identify and select students who demonstrate talent and aptitude, and encourage and assist them in pursuing research careers in their chosen fields. The program assists the students to realize their potential, and ensure that the best scientific talent is tapped for research and development establishments in the country.
The scholarships will be provided up to the Pre-PhD level to the selected students. In addition, summer programmes in prestigious research and education institutions in the country will be organized and preferential access to facilities such as libraries, laboratories, museums, etc. will be provided.
The KVPY program is administered by Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore on behalf of Department of Science and Technology (DST), GOI. Over the years it has gained popularity as the most attractive scholarship and training scheme for young students in the country. So far 318 fellowships have been awarded to bright students in the field of basic science, engineering and medicine.
Eligibility CriteriaClass X pass outs
(a) Stream SA: Students Joining in XI Std. (Science subjects) during a current academic year and having secured a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in the X-Standard Board Examination.
(b) Stream SB: Students enrolled in the Ist Year Science under-graduate programme (B.Sc./integrated M.Sc.) during a current academic year and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in the XII Standard Board Examination.
(c) Stream SB: “Students of Class 12 (+2) of a current academic year who are aspiring to join ISSER for Integrated M. S programme for the session August 2008 may also take the KVPY Aptitude Test for the SB Stream provided they secure a minimum of 75% marks (65% for SC/ST) aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in X Standard Board Examination
Basic Sciences
Stream SP: Students pursuing XI, XII or any UG programme (I or II year) in Basic Sciences during a current academic year and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in the X Standard and XII Standard Board Examinations. The completed application should carry a science based research project.
Engineering
Stream EA: Students joining 1st year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch during a current academic year and have (or likely) secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in the XII Standard Board Examination. The completed application should carry a research project.
Stream EB: Students joining the second year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch during a current academic year having a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) in the first year exam of B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. The application should carry a research project.
Medicine
Students enrolled in Second Year M.B.B.S. programme during a current academic year. Students must have passed XII Standard Board Examination with 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in Science subjects. The application should carry a Bio-Medical research project along with the application.

Selection ProcedureBasic Sciences (SA and SB)
After scrutiny of application forms and based on the performance in the Board Examination, about 10,000 – 12,000 candidates from Streams SA and SB will be called for a written aptitude test (multiple choice). The test is conducted at different centers across the country generally in the month of November. The details of the venue of the aptitude tests will be mailed to the short listed candidates in October. Based on the performance in the aptitude test up to 600-800 candidates in Streams SA and SB will be called for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure.
Sciences (SP), Engineering (EA, EB) and Medicine (MA) KVPY applicant is required to submit the project report, chosen and executed by the candidate exclusively for this application. The projects done jointly with other candidates are not considered for KVPY Fellowship award. Applicant’s creativity and originality should be amply reflected in the project. This project has to be supervised by a teacher/professional in the relevant field. Based on the project submitted and scrutiny of application forms, short listed candidates will be called for an interview, which is the final stage of the selection procedure. The interview will be conducted at IISc, Bangalore, IIT-Bombay, Mumbai and ICMR, New Delhi during the month of December or first week of January of next year.
Note: Applications without the project report will not be considered. The project should not be a routine one (such as measuring well known property of materials etc.) The supervising teacher or professional is required to provide a recommendation letter certifying the extent of the applicant’s original contribution to the project.
Syllabus
There is no prescribed syllabus for the written test. The written test aims to test the understanding and analytical ability of the student than the factual knowledge.
Application Procedure
Following are the guidelines to apply for KVPY:
- Each Stream has its own application form. Students who wish to apply for more than one Stream should submit separate applications.
- Applicants may apply either by Hard copy or Online. (www.iisc.ernet.in/kvpy).
- Application forms may be down loaded from the KVPY website. Those who are unable to do so, may request for a Hard Copy.
- Hard copy of the application form can be obtained from KVPY on request by sending a processing fee of Rs. 100/- (Rs. 25/- for SC/ST) by means of DD/IPO drawn in favour of SID A/c KVPY payable at Bangalore, clearly indicating the stream (SA, SB, SP, EA, EB, MA) on the envelope.
- The SC/ST – candidates should provide a copy of the caste certificate issued by a competent authority in the prescribed proforma.
The completed application form should include the following (whenever necessary):
1.) Caste certificate in the case of SC/ST candidate
2.) Project report in the case of SP/EA/EB/MA
3.) Copy of the marks statement of the qualifying examination(s), in the case of EA/EB/MA
4.) Processing fee of Rs. 100/- (Rs. 25/- for SC/ST) should reach KVPY on or before the date as mentioned in the notification.
