China is a cheap place to study. One academic year of study should not cost you more than US$2,000 in tuition fees unless you choose one of the most prestigious universities (like Beijing University). The main factor affecting your wallet will be accommodation. In Beijing or Shanghai dormitory accommodation can be US$15 or higher per day for a single overcrowded room. This cost can be halved immediately by studying at one of the second-tier Chinese cities and reduced even further in a third-tier Chinese city.
There are similar premiums on food and entertainment in Beijing or Shanghai. Good places to party, but not so suitable for a student on a tight budget. Other cities in China can be generalized as follows:
Coastal cities tend to be more expensive than inland cities.
Cities in the highly-developed south of China tend to be more expensive than the north.
Students will find the prices of most goods to be around 10%-25% of similar goods sold in Europe.
ClimateObviously the south is warmer - in fact it can be extremely hot and humid in the summer. In contrast the north can be temperate between April - October but bitterly cold between December - February. As a general rule coastal cities tend to have the nicest climates. The further students go inland the larger the variation between summer and winter temperatures. The south is affected more by the rainy season during summer months.
