This University has been at the forefront of distance learning for many years, and offers a variety of distance learning opportunities, including first degrees, postgraduate degrees and CPD courses. All distance-learning courses are modular and the majority of courses are linked to the Credit Accumulation and Transfer system (CAT), awarding SCOTCAT levels and points from Level 2 to Masters Level.
Advantages of Distance Learning
The main advantage of distance learning is that it allows students to study at a time, pace and place convenient to their needs. Learning can therefore be integrated into existing commitments whether they be professional, personal or domestic. Because of this, distance
learning is an increasingly popular method of course delivery for busy professionals wishing to update their practice or continue their academic development. Students can also benefit from the trend within the University towards mixed mode delivery where students can choose a certain component of their course to be undertaken by distance learning.
Student Support & Tuition
Although the student is studying at a distance from the University the importance of supporting students through their programme or course of study is well recognised. The University has in place a wide range of support systems to help distance learning students at various stages of the learning process. This is accomplished in a variety of ways from local face-to-face tutorials and telephone tutorials to text-based or electronic study guides that direct learning from commencement of a module of study to the formal assessment. In many courses students also have the opportunity to network with other learners through a range of media options such as teleconferencing, videoconferencing, the internet (email) and computers.
International students' admissions
Postgraduate (Graduate) degrees
The University has experience in assessing a wide range of overseas qualifications. We are looking for qualifications that show that you have the ability to study your chosen course successfully at the University of Dundee. Qualifications from many countries are accepted for entry at Dundee, provided that they are considered as equivalent in standard to UK qualifications.
Applicants who hold a good Bachelor degree may be considered for postgraduate study (Diploma, MSc, MA, LLM etc). Applicants who hold a Masters degree may be considered for postgraduate research.
Undergraduate degrees
As a general guide we look for good high-school qualifications which would at least gain you entry to a degree course in your own country. In some cases we may recommend an additional Foundation Course year of study before granting degree course admission.
We also welcome applications from students who have studied beyond school level and may be qualified for advanced entry to the 2nd or 3rd year of a degree course.
The information given below is a guide, which applies to most degree subjects. For Art & Design courses, a portfolio (samples of your art-work) is also required. For Medicine and Dentistry, different entry requirements apply - please contact the International Office directly.
Indian students
For entry to the 1st year of our degree courses, students must have good results (60%+ best of four including English) in the CBSE, ISC or leading state board XII Standard exams. Students with excellent grades (75%+) in relevant subjects may be able to enter the 2nd year of some degree courses directly.
English Language Qualifications
Courses at the University of Dundee are taught in English. You must have a very good standard of English in order to perform well in all aspects of your academic studies.
As indicated in the application form, if English is not your first language, then you must provide current documentation to show that you have achieved a good level of competence in English.
Please note that although for most courses the minimum entry-level requirement for English Language is IELTS 6 (or equivalent), there are certain exceptions: BSc and MSc Applied Computing require IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent); and the Law degree (LLB) requires IELTS 7 (or equivalent).
