Walden University has been offering graduate education at a distance for over 30 years. Our experience has taught us that students who possess three foundational traits are poised for success in the distance-learning environment. If you are considering distance education, you should have or begin to develop the following:
Time Management Skills
Most Walden University students are not pursuing their degree full time. It is not unusual for Walden students to juggle their career, family, and personal interests in addition to their academic pursuits. This is often the biggest challenge students face. Therefore, time management skills are possibly the most important factor in determining success in a distance-delivered program.
Self-Motivation and Determination
Given the high level of autonomy and flexibility of Walden's programs, students must be self-motivated and determined to stay on track. Students receive a great deal of support from Walden faculty and student services staff. However, even with superior support services and nurturing faculty, the most successful students are those who motivate themselves, stay focused, and push themselves to progress.
High Comfort Level with Technology
Technology is an important tool for all Walden students. Students use technology to get information, to learn, and to communicate with faculty, staff, and other students. Therefore, a high comfort level with technology is important to success. Students must be comfortable using personal computers, e-mail, the Internet, and common software programs such as word processors before enrolling in any Walden program. Individuals who have little or no experience with these technologies are advised to investigate introductory courses in personal computers at community colleges or computer training facilities.

International Applicants
International applicants with degrees from universities outside the United States or Canada must have their academic transcripts evaluated and certified by an independent agency approved by Walden University. Applicants must pay the fee involved directly to the agency. For details, contact a recruitment counselor at 1-941-498-4700. Walden University accepts only evaluations conducted by members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES).
Because student work must be completed in English and students need to participate fully (orally and in writing) in residency sessions, demonstrated satisfactory proficiency in English is required of all applicants.
If English is not an applicant's native language, that applicant must demonstrate satisfactory proficiency in English by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Official copies of these scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to the Office of Student Enrollment. These scores must be submitted before consideration for admission to a degree program is possible. The TOEFL code number for Walden University is 6911. This requirement may be waived for students who have earned a degree from an institution accredited by one of the regional accrediting associations recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Minimum TOEFL score to qualify for admission to all Walden programs: Paper-based = 550 Computer-based - 213
