Grading System Followed in France

The French grading system is based mostly on a 20-point grading scale. It is used in secondary schools and universities.

French High School Diploma

The French high school diploma baccalaureate uses the 20-point scale.

Following mentions or honours are awarded:

  • 18-20:Congratulations (félicitations du jury not an official grade)

  • 16-17:very good (très bien- TB)

  • 14-15:good (bien- B)

  • 12-13:satisfactory (assez bien- AB)

  • 10-11:correct (correcte not an official grade)

  • 8-10:pass ("passable") as long as the overall average of grades remains above 10 - not an official grade

  • 0-8:Fail (insuffisant)

Higher Education Institutions

The Grading System awards a zero score for the lowest on the grading scale and a score of 20 for the highest on the grading scale.

Main grading system used by higher education institutions:
  • Full Score:20

  • 10-12 Passable

  • 12-14 Assez-Bien

  • 14-16 Bien

  • 16-20 Très Bien

  • Highest on scale:20

  • Pass/fail level:10

  • Lowest on scale:0

The French grading system ranges from 0 to 20. A score 20 signifies perfection and is virtually never given. Score of 19 and 18 are equally rarely given. Depending on the subject and level, a 16 is an excellent grade. In yet other circumstances, a 12 may also be considered as an excellent grade.

If a student obtains an average grade of 12/20, s/he will receive the French baccalauréat with honors "Mention Assez Bien".

If a student obtains an average of 14/20, s/he will receive the French baccalauréat with high honors "Mention Bien".

If a student obtains an average grade of 16/20, s/he will receive the French baccalauréat with highest honors "Mention Très Bien".
