In France, kids start school very early: school starts at age 2 (for 52% of children) or 3 (for almost 100%) and children spend 3 years in kindergarten. Schooling is compulsory until age 16. In primary schools, French kids spend more hours a year (more than 900, like Italy and the Netherlands) than other European countries (less than 700 for Austria, Germany and Finland).
All professors in public schools and universities are employed and paid by the state. The Ministry of Education is, by far, the largest employer in France. Higher education in France is imparted through three main categories of institutions with varying objectives, structures and admission requirements. The students who complete Secondary School in France receive a diploma known as the Baccalaurea that entitles them to enter University. There are two different types of education institutes you can choose from Universities and Grandes Ecoles (Described as competitive Institutes).There are about 87 University and over 300 Grandes Ecoles in France. The university covers all disciplines and trains student for research. The Grande Ecoles take in lower number of students in areas that have direct career applicability. These can be either Public or Private institutions.
