Grading System in New Zealand Universities

Grading scales in New Zealand differ slightly between institutions but are primarily based on the letter scale with A as the highest grade and F as the lowest. The pattern of grades continue on a lower scale and follows the patterns of: A , A, A-, B , B, B-, C , C with C being the lowest passing grade and equivalent to 50% or slightly above. D, E and F with Q are failing grades for students who have failed to meet compulsory course requirements.

New Zealand universities have very different marking system to the one you might be familiar with. You might be only given 65 percent for a good piece of work whereas many other countries might award you 70 percent for the same work. So do not be upset if you are given lower grades by New Zealand universities.

New Zealand Uni Grade New Zealand Uni Percentage
 A , A, A-  100% - 80%
 B , B, B-   79% - 65%
 C , C, C-   64% - 50%
D   49% - 40%
E
39% - 0%

Following is the grading system followed in Massey University. The grading system might however, differ in other universities.

 A , A, A-
First Class Pass
 B , B, B-  Second Class Pass
 C , C
 Pass
 P  Ungraded Pass
 AEG  Aegrotat Pass
R  Restricted Pass
F

D

E

NF

DNC

WD

The cutting points for grades vary depending upon academic guidelines.

An aegrotat pass is given to a student if he or she fails in an examination due to circumstances beyond his or her control  like bereavement, injury or any other serious problem but their application fulfills the criteria laid down by the University.
