New Zealand - Scholarships for Higher Education

New Zealand offers excellent opportunities for higher education. Qualifications from internationally recognised universities. The degrees rank with some of the world's best high education qualifications. 

To give an impetus to international students, New Zealand authorities as well as other international bodies offer scholarships to students to pursue a career in one of the top ranked New Zealand universities.

NZODA Scholarships for Students from developing countries like India


These Overseas Development Assistance (NZODA) Postgraduate Scholarships are offered by the New Zealand Government for students from developing countries. This scholarship covers airfares, accommodation and living expenses, as well as tuition fees.

Number of scholarships are extremely limited and therefore it is only awarded to students with exceptional grades. You can acquire your application forms from the University International Centre or your New Zealand Diplomatic post.


NZAID (New Zealand's International Aid and Development Agency) is New Zealand's agency responsible for international assistance to developing countries. The scholarship schemes offered under this category covers tuition fees, orientation fees, economy fare, travel, a basic living allowance with the provision for accommodation expenses (paid through study institutes). Students from India can apply for NZDS open (via universities) categories.


New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships


New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS) are open to all international students who meet the eligibility criteria.

NZIDRS scholarships include:
  • full tuition fees for three years of full-time doctoral study
  • up to NZ$600 annual health insurance allowance
  • NZ$20,500 per annum living allowance
  • NZ$2000 (across 3 year tenure) travel allowance. This is intended to be used for conference attendance and field research
  • NZ$800 (across 3 year tenure) book and thesis allowance
  • NZ$500 one-off establishment allowance. Only to be paid to those students who are travelling to NZ specifically to take up the NZIDRS. No student already located in NZ is eligible to receive this amount.
  • Additional funds are not available to support accompanying dependants.

Evidence of available supervision


You need to demonstrate that academic supervision is available while applying for this scholarship. Ensure the availability of spervisors in your relevant department before submitting your application.

NZIDRS application close date

Closing date of NZIDRS application is 15th of July every year.  Applications will be accepted from early May until 5pm (NZ time) on Thursday the 15th of July 2010.

Commonwealth Scholarships and Fellowship Plan


The NZVCC (New Zealand Vice Chancellors' Committee) awards Commonwealth scholarships in New Zealand. Approximately 10 new Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded each year by the New Zealand Government to meritorious students from Commonwealth Countries.

Levels of study

Commonwealth Scholarships are available for candidates from developing countries to study in New Zealand at Masters or doctoral level. While the scholarship is valid for two years for a Masters qualification, for doctorate study, the scholarship is valid for four years.

Fields of study

Commonwealth Scholarships are available in all disciplines, but preference will be given to candidates who choose fields of study relevant to the development of their home country.

    Si, I want PR in newzealand .i have done M.sc maths in 2008 after then i have done B.Ed in2009 .Currently i m working as a teacher from last two year in well reputed Prviate sr,secondary school.I want to migrate there with my husband.     i applied 8 days ago for student visa to new zealand, yesterday i recieved a call from immigration officer bombay, she asked me about my snr sec educatoin , because i have completed my 10 th in 2005, and 12th in2008 , because i could,nt prepeared well for mathematics , and i got suppy of it, then i cleared it in golden chance , and punjab board issued me certificate of 2008 , i give reason to immigration officer that my grand father was ill , he admitted in a hospital, my father doing a job, am onlya single
