University of California, Irvine (for UCI students only)

    UROP: Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program for UCI students ONLY
    UROP encourages
    and supports research and creative activities by UCI undergraduates under the supervision of faculty members. Support can be provided in all phases of research activity: proposal writing, developing research plans, resource support (financing), conducting research, analysing data and presenting results. Projects may be conducted at any time during the academic year and/or summer and may take place in any academic department or interdisciplinary laboratory - on campus or internationally.

    199 with UCI Faculty for UCI students Only

    UCI students can pursue their own research abroad through the 199 course option at UCI. Application deadlines vary.
    MIRT-NIH Minority International Research Training Program for UCI students Only
    Through the MIRT program, UCI minority (African Americans, Chicano/Latinos, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders) advanced undergraduate students interested in careers in biological and biomedical research may apply to participate in an intensive and rigorous research training abroad.  In summer 1999, UCI will select four students to participate on a ten-week long program at the Instituto de Biologia Molecular "Severo Ochoa" of the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain.  Participants will receive round-trip transportation, housing, and a stipend. Applications are available at the Minority Science Programs (MSP) office in 423 Steinhaus Hall or on their web site.

Bermuda Biological Station For Research, Inc.
BBSR offers students the opportunity to obtain up to four months of hands-on experience working with a scientist on an on-going project in atmospheric studies, chemistry, ecology or marine biology. Scuba diving certification helpful, but not mandatory. Room and board provided.

Boston University
BU offers a spring semester program in Belize where students of archaeology, anthropology and related disciplines can earn credit while actively participating in a field research project at the Maya site of K'axob near Orange Walk. Students will acquire archaeological fieldwork experience in the technical skills of excavation, recording, mapping and preliminary artifact processing. Course work include directed studies in Archaeology, archaeological field methods and studies in Mesoamerican Archaeology. Classes are in English. Financial aid is available.

DAAD: German Academic Exchange Service
DAAD sponsors grants for summer study and research in Germany. Applicants must be US citizens and currently enrolled or teaching at accredited US universities or colleges. Proficiency in reading German is expected.

Earthwatch
Earthwatch allows volunteers to join research scientists in fields such as archaeology, marine biology, animal behavior, ecology, and anthropology on projects all over the world. Expeditions take place year-round for 2-3 weeks at a time. Cost of the program is considered a tax-deductible contribution.

Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary
Students assist in the maintenance of the botanical gardens in India. Those doing research are welcome and will have access to the sanctuary research facilities and the opportunity to receive informal instruction from the staff. Positions are voluntary and there is a very minimal charge for room and board.

Hansard Scholars Programme
The Hansard Society for Parliamentary Government, in conjunction with the London School of Economics and the University of London, offers the opportunity for students to become involved in the workings of the British government and politics, accompanied by a comprehensive study of British politics and public policy. Students are mainly assigned internships with Members of Parliament, but also to political parties and think tanks. For more information, e-mail: hansard@lse.ac.uk

ICADS: Institute for Central American Development Studies
ICADS offers semester and summer programs in Central American social and environmental issues in Belize and Costa Rica. Over forty structured internships and research opportunities are available in each country in the areas of agriculture, development, environment, health, and women's studies. Short study tours of Nicaragua or Panama are available.

La Suerte Biological Field Station
La Suerte offers affordable study and research programs in Costa Rica in areas such as primate behavior, tropical herpetology, rainforest ecology, neotropical fish and neotropical birds. This comprehensive field school offers lectures, the ability to master field techniques and to do individual research projects.

Lexia Exchange International
LEXIA offers summer and semester academic programs with a research component in Argentina, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Poland, and South Africa. Classes are taught in English, but intensive language is required during the first phase of the program. A multi-disciplinary course introduces the history, politics, economics, geography and culture of the host country. Students then pursue an independent, well-defined field research project during the second phase of the program. Internships are also available.

School for Fields Studies
SFS offers students the opportunity to obtain field training before graduation by providing an experience-based education in environmental issues, including the sustainable management of natural resources. Hands-on field studies and research sites are available in Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Kenya, Mexico, and the Pacific Islands during fall, spring and summer. School for International Training
SIT offers semester long programs in Australia, Belize, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, China, Cuba, Czech Republic, Ecuador, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Madagascar, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, the Netherlands, Nigeria, the Northwest Coast First Nations, Palestine, Polynesia , Russia, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, Venezuela, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe. Semesters can be combined thematically and in area studies for a full year abroad. Intensive language study, home stays, field study and independent research are integral parts of every program. Financial aid is available.

SEA: Sea Education Association
SEA is headquartered at Woods Hole, MA as part of a community of prestigious institutions that make up the oceanographic center of the eastern United States and offers academic programs in ocean studies. SEA's multidisciplinary curriculum offers students a unique opportunity to combine the world of marine science with an offshore sailing and research experience. SEA's primary emphasis is the 12-week, full-credit undergraduate program, SEA Semester. Students undertake course work ashore followed by a practical component at sea. SEA also offers SEA Seminars, shorter programs in marine science designed for teachers, high school students, adults and groups from other educational organizations.

UREP: University Research Expedition Program
Worldwide research expeditions are offered in the summer through the University of California. Countries vary from year to year, but recent opportunities have been in Belize, Benin, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Germany, India, Ireland, Mexico, Micronesia, Siberia, Turkey, and Uganda. Students may research projects in animal behavior in Pakistan and Kenya. Projects are also conducted in botany and ecology in Ecuador and Malawi. Financial assistance is available.
