INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS 2003 -2004

AIFS International Scholarships

Purpose: The purpose of the AIFS International Scholarship is to promote international understanding through study abroad. The awards celebrate the founding 38 years ago of the American Institute For Foreign Study® and must be used on applicable AIFS programs.

Eligibility :Candidates will be limited to currently enrolled college undergraduates with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA who also satisfy the program requirements of the course for which they are applying.

Selection criteria To
be considered a candidate you must meet the minimum requirements of the program to which you are applying, have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, show leadership potential and be involved in extra-curricular activities centered on multicultural or international issues. Candidates who meet the scholarship criteria and program requirements will have their essays judged by the independent selection committee. In choosing scholars, preference will be given to those applying for the full academic year. The decision of the selection committee is final and is not subject to appeal.

Scholarship provisions: AIFS offers up to 150 semester scholarships of $1,000 each annually as well as up to 50 summer scholarships of $750 each for use on these AIFS programmes .

Application procedure: Candidates must submit the scholarship application in addition to the appropriate AIFS academic year and semester or summer application. Applicants should also submit a typed or word processed 500 - 1,000 word essay on the subject, "Why study abroad is beneficial to American students."

Deadlines: Applicants for summer programs must apply by March 15 2003 , fall semester by April 15, 2003 and spring semester by October 15, 003. AIFS International Scholarship candidates may also apply for the Minority Scholarship. Only one scholarship will be awarded per applicant. For more information call (800) 727-2437.

Minority Scholarships

Purpose:To help increase the participation of ethnic minority college students in study abroad programmes Recipients are expected to be ambassadors of international understanding within their communities upon return.

Eligibility:Applications will be accepted from African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Native-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and Pacific Islanders who are currently enrolled as undergraduates at a U.S. institution.

Selection criteria To be considered, a candidate must: Meet the admission requirements of the AIFS program selected as described in the AIFS academic year and semester catalog; Demonstrate financial need, academic accomplishment (normally, successful candidates have a GPA in excess of 3.0) and leadership ability; Be involved in community/extra-curricular activities centered around multicultural or international issues; Have completed a minimum of 24 credits toward a degree when the program starts; Submit required application materials. An independent committee of international educators reviews eligible applications and selects the recipient.

Scholarship provisions The full scholarship includes the program fees plus round trip air transportation from one of 30 AIFS gateway cities in the U.S. It does not include spending money, textbook costs or personal travel while abroad. Runners-up are eligible for one of the three $2,000 scholarships awarded per semester.

Application procedure Candidates must complete the Minority Scholarship application, include a letter of reference and complete the regular AIFS academic year and semester application. Applicants should also submit an essay (typed or word processed) describing their involvement in multicultural or international activities and how they expect to apply in their community what they gain from a study abroad experience. As a condition of acceptance, the full scholarship recipient agrees to write an essay (500 - 1,000 words) at the completion of the program addressing how he/she will use the study abroad experience to give back to the community.

Deadlines: Completed applications with all required materials must be submitted by October 15,2003 for spring semester, and no later than April 15,2003 for fall semester. Students unable to pay the $50 application fee may submit a fee waiver endorsed by their financial aid office or study abroad advisor. Minority candidates are also encouraged to apply for the AIFS International Scholarship, although they cannot receive both awards For more information call (800) 727-2437.

Agatha Harrison Memorial Fellowship ( St. Antony's College, Oxford)

Level of Study : Advanced Research

Duration : 1year

Notification : Employment News / Leading Newspapers in : April/May every year

Subject Fields : Modern Indian Studies in History, Economics, Political Science.

Eligibility : Indian national. Age 30-40 yrs in case of general candidates and 42 years in case of Sc/St candidates as on October of the in-take year..

Qualifications Uniformly brilliant academic record (with 60% marks at Master's degree level) with Ph D degree in the subject field or published works of equivalent merit.Minimum three years teaching experience at Graduate/Post-Graduate level.

Value /Passage Cost :Stipend of Pounds 16,927 and economy class air passage (both ways) borne by the Government of India.

Application Procedure: Typed application with attested copies of testimonials, programme of study, photograph and otheron plain paper. Employed persons should send their applications duly sponsored by their employer.

Commonwealth Scholarships and fellowship

This is an annual scheme made available to all Commonwealth countries by the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission. The India programme is managed jointly by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU, UK); Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India and the British Council. Scholarships and Fellowships are available for a wide range of subjects.

Eligibility

Subjects

Clinical training/research  medicine: cancer research (including cancer epidemiology); cardiology, gynaecology, medicine and dentistry. 

Master's Engineering and Technology: electronics; environmental studies; remote sensing technology; communication engineering; bio-technology/biochemical engineering; robotics (including artificial intelligence). 

Science (pure and applied): mathematics; molecular biology; physics; chemistry (including pharmaceutical/ medicinal chemistry), 

Agriculture and allied fields: animal husbandry; agronomy; forestry. 

Humanities and Social Sciences: history; sociology; management studies; fine art; (including western painting, art history, graphic design and sculpture); economics, philosophy; psychology; computer applications, law; English (literature/linguistics). 

Doctoral: subjects as above excluding Medicine.

Candidate requirements: To apply for a scholarship, you must: be an Indian citizen residing in India 

Have completed tertiary education in English medium,  hold a doctorate (or other postgraduate qualifications accepted as sufficient for the career you are in) have been awarded your doctorate no less than five and no more than ten years from the date of taking up the 

Fellowship: Have at least two-years experience as a staff member of a university or similar institution in your home country be aged 50 or under at time of applying.

Selection: The preliminary selection of candidates for scholarships is carried out in India by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Department of Education, Government of India. The preliminary selection is done through a process of short listing of applications, followed by personal interviews in New Delhi.

Funding: University fees, scholar's return travel, allowance for books, apparatus, approved study, travel, personal maintenance (plus allowances, where applicable, for spouse and children). Fixed Research Support Grant in case of research.

When to apply: You must apply for these scholarships at least one year before the course starts. Deadlines vary, so you must check that you know what the deadline is before applying.

Notification: These scholarships are advertised in July or August every year in national dailies/ employment news for the awards beginning the following academic year

Interview dates: The interviews are normally held in November or December for the awards beginning September of the following year. The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), London, does the final selection on the basis of the nominations sent by the MHRD.

Visas: Student visas for the UK will be arranged gratis by the British Council. AWARD Master's/M.Phil/ PhD/ one-year clinical training/Fellowship.

Fulbright Fellowships

Since 1950, USEFI has awarded approximately 7,180 Fulbright fellowships to Indians and Americans. In addition to these programs sponsored by the US Department of State, USEFI has also administered approximately 7,450 fellowships funded by the U.S. Government such as the East-West Center grants, Faculty Research Abroad Program, Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program and Group Projects and Seminars Abroad Program.

Funding for Fulbright fellowships are allocated by the Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) Division of the Department of State.

Guidelines and policies for administration of the fellowships are laid down, reviewed and revised periodically, by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB), whose members are appointed by the U.S. President.

Fulbright programs in India are administered by USEFI's Board of Directors, in conformity with the guidelines set by FFSB. Agencies for cooperating with Fulbright Commissions in administering the fellowships in the U.S. are appointed by the Department of State through the ECA Division.

The Institute of International Education (IIE) through its various wings and regional offices, has been fulfilling this role for a very long time.

Fellowships for Indian Citizens

How to Apply/ General Prerequisites: The applicant should: be a responsible Indian citizen who can contribute to a full and fair picture of the culture and civilization of India, and thereby help to promote understanding and friendship between the peoples of the United States and India;

Have a high level of academic/professional achievement; demonstrate proficiency in the English language which is commensurate with the project that s/he wishes to pursue and is adequate to adjust to life in the U.S.

The applicant may be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); be present in India while submitting the application and for the interview (if required);

Be eligible for leave, if employed; be in good health; and not have been in the U.S. during the past three years on a teaching, research, study or professional assignment for a continuous period of three months or more, when submitting the application.

Application Procedure and Guidelines Application material may be obtained in person from any of the USEFI offices or requests may be sent to the USEFI office in your region along with a self-addressed and stamped (Rs.15.00) 10" x 7" envelope.

Please state your academic/professional qualifications, date of birth, present position, and fellowship category in your request letter.

Completed applications (including enclosures, if any) must be submitted through the appropriate administrative authority (Vice-Chancellor / Registrar/Director/Principal) to the USEFI office in your region. Applicants are requested to submit separate applications if applying for more than one fellowship category.

Deadline: Applications must reach USEFI by the specified deadline date or the following Monday if the deadline falls on a weekend. In the case of central or state government employees, a copy of the completed application should be sent, through the proper channel, to the "Deputy Secretary (U-4), Department of Secondary Education and Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), Shastri Bhavan, New Delhi 110001, to reach the Ministry two weeks before the application deadline.

Such candidates are advised to send an advance copy (a photocopy of the completed application) along with a copy of the forwarding note to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, to USEFI, New Delhi, well before the application deadline.

Consideration will, however, be given only if the application forwarded by the Ministry of HRD reaches USEFI by the deadline. Incomplete applications or applications not forwarded through the proper channel will not be considered.

Applicants are also advised to request three referees to send in their recommendations, either on the Reference Report Form or the referee's letterhead (as specified in the Preliminary Application Form), directly to the USEFI office in New Delhi.

In case of employed candidates, the employer's comments in the application form must indicate that leave will be granted for the fellowship.

All entries in the application form must be typewritten or computer-generated and not handwritten.

A completed application should not be sent as an attachment through e-mail.

Selection Process Expert committees will review all eligible applications. Applicants recommended by the committees will be required to appear for an interview with the USEFI National Selection Committee in New Delhi.

In case of certain fellowship categories, applicants may be required to appear for regional level interviews as well. Decisions taken by the committees in connection with the selection process will be final and requests for reconsideration will NOT be entertained.

The United States Educational Foundation in India have announced Fulbright Fellowships for Indian citizens for the academic year 2003-4 and have invited applications for the same.

Paul Moonves Memorial Scholarship

It was instituted to honor Paul Moonves, former AIFS Treasurer and Executive Vice President, one $2,500 scholarship will be awarded per semester to students studying and/or interning with AIFS in Amsterdam, Holland. The scholarships will be awarded to students based on outstanding potential and innovative spirit, rather than past academic performance. Students will need to meet all existing AIFS GPA requirements. A selection committee, which includes friends and colleagues of Mr. Moonves, will meet each semester to review the submitted essays and award the scholarships

Tcherepnine Scholarship

This is highly coveted scholarshiop instituted in the memory of the famous Russian composer who lived from 1899-1977 in Russia, France and the U.S.,and whose son happens to be an AIFS board member. The AIFS Foundation will award one $2,500 scholarship per semester to a student who has been accepted to a St. Petersburg program. Eligible students must have a 3.0 or better GPA.

  • Deadlines are the same as for existing AIFS grants—October 15 for spring semester and April 15 for fall.
