Officially incorporated
on 12 January 2000, the Singapore Management University (SMU) holds the unique position of being Singapore's first private university funded by the government of Singapore. An Act of Parliament empowers SMU to confer its own degrees recognised by the government. This flexibility will facilitate SMU's aim to be a world-class university on par with the best internationally. With English as the working language in Singapore and at SMU, international students and faculty find it particularly accessible studying and working here.

The SMU approach to preparing graduates for an era of unparalleled choices is a focused but broad-based education. Modeled after the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, America's top business school, SMU's curriculum aims to groom outstanding business leaders and creative entrepreneurs capable of excelling in a rapidly changing and dynamic world.

SMU opened its doors to the pioneer intake of Business Management students in August 2000. The Accountancy programme began in August 2001, followed by a Bachelor of Economics and Social Sciences degree in 2002. Starting in August 2003, a fourth degree programme in Information Systems Management will be offered. All programmes adopt a flexible, multidisciplinary approach towards managing the increasingly complex demands of modern businesses, notably with an emphasis on computer literacy and technology, company internships, business visits and student exchange programmes. The objective is to develop well-rounded students with the ability to focus on specialised careers.
To deliver the world-class curriculum, an outstanding faculty has been handpicked to advance knowledge in teaching and research. Besides recruiting some of the best academics in their field, SMU will also tap successful businessmen for their specific expertise and management skills to combine academic vigour with hands-on business savvy.

SMU currently offers :

Bachelor of Accountancy
Bachelor of Business Management
Bachelor of Science (Economics)
Bachelor of Science (Information Systems Management)

All these programmes are conducted on a full-time basis only. There are no part-time undergraduate programmes.SMU recognises that applicants may show talent and outstanding achievements in areas other than academic studies. SMU seeks students with strong academic potential, high self-motivation and broad interests. We aim to enroll individuals who will contribute to a rich university learning environment and benefit most from a stimulating and vibrant campus experience.

Admission will be competitive and selective to allow students outstanding in different fields to be considered on their own merit. SMU will use several measures to evaluate an applicant's achievements and abilities. Besides their academic results and SAT I scores, a personal essay and an interview will also count.

SMU welcomes students from all streams (science, arts, commerce, engineering, etc.). At SMU they enjoy the best of both worlds - a top-class US curriculum and teaching method (in collaboration with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania) and the convenience and affordability of the local setting. In addition, there are opportunities for overseas exchange programmes.

Students can enjoy state-of-the-art facilities at the Bukit Timah campus and, beginning in 2005, at Singapore's first city campus at Bras Basah. Students can look forward to a vibrant and intellectually stimulating life at SMU and participate in a broad range of cultural, sports and recreation activities, including interest groups.

The tuition fees at SMU are comparable to the fees charged at the other universities in Singapore. Scholarships and financial assistance schemes are available to deserving students. Students who do well in their studies at SMU will be eligible for the various Student Awards.
Double Degree Programme
Under the double degree programme, a student can graduate in four years with two degrees - in any combination in Accountancy, Business Management, Economics or Information Systems Management.

The double degree programme gives students an invaluable edge in the New Economy, and an unrivalled versatility and flexibility in career options.

Students who have outstanding results in their GCE A-Levels or polytechnic or equivalent high school qualifications, may apply for direct entry into the double degree programme.

Alternatively, SMU students who are enrolled in a single degree programme and have excellent results in their first year at SMU, will also have the opportunity to opt for the double degree programme.
Second Major Programme
All SMU students enrolled in a single degree programme and have done well in their first year at SMU may opt to do a second major in any of the following:

- Accounting
- Economics
- Finance
- Information Systems Management
- Law
- Marketing

Students may opt for a second major at the end of their first year at SMU, not at the point of application for admission to SMU.

Students will be given a broad-based liberal education, flexibility in the choice of certain subjects, yet at the same time major in Economics. The curriculum is similar in structure to the two other degree programmes offered by SMU (the BBM and the BAcc) both of which have been developed in close collaboration with the consistently top ranked Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Students who are admitted into the BSc programme in 2004 and 2005 may also choose to double major in Economics and Finance. Admission into the double major programme in Economics and Finance will be based on merit.

The Singapore Management University (SMU) is pleased to offer the Master of Science (MSc) in Applied Finance programme from January 2002 - SMU's first graduate programme by coursework. This landmark programme aims to raise the standard of practitioners' knowledge and skills in applied finance, a critical training need as identified by authorities and the finance industry.

Besides covering critical components required to meet the high standards of an MSc degree in Applied Finance, as an added feature, the curriculum is designed to meet the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) examination requirements for those pursuing their CFA designation.
PROGRAMME DURATION

This intensive part-time programme is designed to be completed in 18 months spread over 3 terms. Each term is eighteen weeks, divided into 2 halves of nine weeks duration.
The Programme begins in January. There will be one admission each year.
Candidates are required to complete 16 compulsory modules (2 credits each) and 2 elective modules (4 credits each) to meet the 40-credit requirement of an SMU Master of Science degree.

Bachelor of Accountancy

The Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) is a 4-year programme to develop well-rounded individuals schooled in a variety of subject areas. Modelled after the best of America's top business schools, the curriculum has been developed in close collaboration with the consistently top ranked Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

The BAcc programme aims to produce professional accountants who possess the attributes and skills that are needed to thrive in a knowledge-based economy. Such attributes include analytical and creative abilities, a broad perspective to think across disciplines and geographical or political boundaries, and a confident mastery of today's technology.

The BAcc curriculum is designed to fulfil all professional requirements for recognition by the accountancy profession without the need for further examinations, other than the pre-admission course required for all new members of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS). At the same time, it offers a broad-based and liberal education so as to provide the student with a broader perspective of the work environment and the world at large.

A distinctive feature of the BAcc programme is that top accounting professionals from the accounting profession and industry will participate in the programme as adjunct professors. Audit and tax partners and senior managers from the Big 5 accounting firms will bring real life perspective into the classrooms as instructors for audit and taxation courses. Besides giving students first-hand knowledge, these partners and senior managers will also select students from their classes to go on business internships at their firms. These internships last for a minimum of 10 weeks and can begin anytime after the completion of the first year of studies. Many students can expect to receive employment at these firms by the time they complete their accountancy programme.

Each student is required to complete 35 courses. Each subject area has a list of courses which must all be completed unless a choice is indicated. Students must read a minimum of 3 courses and a maximum of 6 courses per term.
