Working While Studying in the UK

The UK government has made recent changes in the work conditions of students going to the UK from non-European countries. Students on short courses, lasting less than six months would not be allowed to work. Those enrolled in non-degree courses will be allowed to work for only 10 hours a week, instead of 20 at present. Dependents of students in below-degree level courses will not be allowed to work

However, you must show that you can pay your course fees and living expenses without working in the UK and you cannot therefore expect to finance your studies in this way.

Things you must remember while working in the UK as a student:
  • work for more than 10 hours a week during term time if not enrolled in a degree course
  • engage in business, self-employment or provide services as a professional sportsperson or entertainer
  • pursue a career by filling a permanent full-time vacancy
Finding a job

If you are allowed to work, you can easily find out about any part-time jobs that are available through the following routes:
  • notice boards of your institution
  • local newspapers
  • job centres
  • college career offices or 'job shops'

Before taking up a job, think carefully about how much time you are willing to devote towards the job. Remember that your first priority should always be your studies, for which you are there. Courses are very intensive and lot of your time will be required for making good grades. Your work should not interfere with your studies.
