Planning to do a B.Com (Bachelors in Commerce) but not sure what the difference between B.Com & B.Com Hons (Honours) is? Unsure why the cut-off for one degree (B.Com [Hons] course) is much higher than the other (B.Com [pass]) course even though both courses teach you similar things? Both courses introduce you and teach you in detail the subjects that make up the commerce stream. Tthe eligibility criteria for admission to both courses remains the same for most colleges/ universities: HSC or equivalent, with Math and English as compulsory subjects.

Difference between B.com & B.com Hons : Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) is an undergraduate degree program that provides students with a foundational understanding of various aspects of commerce, including accounting, finance, economics, and business management. It is a three-year course that offers a generalized overall understanding of the commerce stream.

However, if you want to specialize in a particular area of commerce, then you can opt for B.Com Honours. During the final year of this four-year program, students can gain specialized and in-depth knowledge in their chosen area of specialization, such as accountancy, economics, banking, insurance, or finance, depending on the college.

While admission to B.Com Honours is slightly more challenging than that of B.Com, the job opportunities are greater for graduates with an honours degree. They usually receive better salaries and packages than those with just a B.Com degree. Having only a B.Com degree may not hold much importance in the service industry nowadays, so graduates typically pursue their Master’s or higher education.

B.Com provides a broad-based education in commerce, while B.Com Honours offer specialized knowledge in a particular area. Graduates with an honours degree have better job opportunities and higher earning potential.

 B.Com (P)

  • B.Com (H) is an undergraduate degree designed to inculcate business acumen in students.

You can also pursue courses like Chartered Accountancy along with your B.Com (honors.)

  • Similar to B.Com (H), the difference is that a student can specialize in a certain subject in B.Com (H), which is not possible in B.Com (P).  In the latter, a student is given an overview of all the subjects taught in the honors course. 
  • A student has the option to specialize in a specific subject like Accounting, etc.
  • A student cannot specialize in a specific subject.
  • The cut-off for various universities/colleges is relatively higher.
  • For eg. B.Com (H) cut off for 2023 admissions for St Stephens College is above 99%
  •  The cut-off for various universities/colleges is relatively lower. 
  • For eg. B.Com cut off for  2023 admissions for St Stephens College is percentage above 96%  

Difference between B.com & B.com Hons Eligibility Criteria for 2023 Admission

Eligibility Criteria for B.Com: Cleared Class 12 with 40% total. Also, a candidate should have a total of 40% or more in English/Hindi and a blend of the best three from among the following subjects: Accountancy, Mathematics Economics, and Business Studies/Commerce.

Eligibility Criteria for B.Com Hons: A total of 45% in Class 12 with Mathematics/Business Mathematics/equivalent paper at Class 12 level. Furthermore, candidates should have a total of 45% or more in English/Hindi and a combination of the best three among the following subjects: Accountancy, Mathematics Economics, and Business Studies/Commerce.

The industry demand for the honors program under B.Com is much higher than the regular program. With the difference between B.com & B.com Hons clear in your mind, it should be relatively easy to make your decision.
