Career in Victimology
Victimology is a branch of science that deals with the study of victimisation, including the relationships between victims and offenders, the interactions between victims and the criminal justice system.
The study also includes the role of police and courts in the victimisation process, and also the connections between victims and other societal groups and institutions, such as the media, businesses, and social movements.
As a professional career (after the completion of the program) it is a bit challenging but extremely rewarding. The course will prepare professionals to manage natural disasters and also equip the participants with skills of crisis intervention.
The course will also be a collaborative effort of the various wings of the criminal justice systems and different department. And, hence, will be an innovative effort at teaching and fostering an interdisciplinary approach.
Victimology Eligibility Criteria
There are both full time and part-time programmes in Victimology available for students, sponsored candidates from industry, agencies, organisations or NGOs, government departments such as police and judiciary, counsellors and social workers and to faculty dealing with students’ issues in educational institutions.
Those with an undergraduate degree in any subject are eligible for the two-year postgraduate programme. Those with a postgraduate degree in the related field or work experience with an NGO are eligible for the six-month diploma programme.
The certificate course offered by few universities/institutes is open only for criminal justice professionals.
The program will adequately educate and train members of police, judiciary, medical and social welfare institutions and other front like professionals and para-professionals working with victims about the basic concepts of victimology and victim assistance.

The course is designed to empower criminal justice professionals to help victims and to sensitise them.
Manonmaniam Sundaranar University offers a world-class curriculum in Victimology. It is sponsored by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under ‘Teaching and research in emerging areas’ and is in line with the United Nations Declaration of the Basic Principles of Justice for Victims of crime and abuse of Power 1985.
On successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand the need for victim assistance, the role of victimology in prevention of crime, the history and role of the victim in society, describe ways victims assistance programs help the victim and also learn how to develop programs to help victims.
Graduates can find employments in the private field of Criminal Justice such as Security Management, Private Detective and Non-governmental organizations. They can also work under government agencies for various projects.
