About AIIMS, Hospitals, Exams, Faculty, Admissions
The first prime minister of Independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru always dreamt of creating a country full of scientific culture. He always had the desire to have maximum scientific growth in the country by building up various temples of modern India with a flavor of science in it. And his dream soon transformed into a reality immediately after independence when he prepared a grand design to achieve it. Among all the temples of modern India which he designed, there was a center of excellence in the medical sciences. Nehru's dream was to come up with such a center which would set the pace for medical education and research in the Southeast Asia, and in this he had the wholehearted support of the then Health Minister, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur.
The dreams of Nehru and Amrit Kaur finally became true in the year 1956 when the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, popularly known as AIIMS, was established as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament. The prime objective of AIIMS is to develop the pattern of teaching in both Undergraduate and Post-graduate Medical Education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of healthcare education in India. It aims at to bring together in one place the educational facilities of the highest order for the training of the personnel in all important branches of the health activity.
