Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT 2017) to join IAF as Officers in Flying, Technical & Ground Duty

The Indian Air Force will be conducting the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT 2017) for male and female Indian citizens for admission to the following courses commencing in January for grant of Short Service Commission in Flying Branch and Permanent/ Short Service Commission on Technical and Ground duty Branches.


There are three programs available:

i) Flying Branch
ii) Technical Branch
iii) Ground Duty Branches

There are two types of Commissions

i) Permanent Commission: candidates under this commission will continue till the age of superannuation
ii) Short Service Commission: engagement period for Flying Branch is 14 years and for Technical and ground Duty branches it is initially 10 years that can be extended for another 4 years.

The duration of the training for Flying and Technical Branches is 74 weeks and for Ground Duty Branches is 52 weeks at Air Force Training Establishments.

Important Dates

  1. Availability of application forms online: 3 December, 2016
  2. Last date for submission of Application forms: 29 December, 2016
  3. Date for AFCAT 2017: 26 February; Sunday

Eligibility Criteria

Flying Branch

  1. Age: Candidates must be between the age of 20-24 years as on 1 January, 2018. Candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot License issued by DGCA (India) may have their upper age limit relaxed to 25 years.
  2. Educational Qualifications- Graduates from any discipline from a recognized University who have attained 60% marks in aggregate in all papers with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level. B.E. or B.Tech. students with minimum 60% marks may also apply.
  3. Physical Standards:

i) Minimum Height is 162.5cms for both men and women with correlated weight, minimum leg length is 99cms and maximum 120cms, thigh length maximum 64cms, sitting height minimum 81.5cms and maximum 96cms.

ii) Vision- Minimum Visual Acuity 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in another, correctable to 6/6 only for Hypermetropia with Manifest Myopia Nil. Candidates with LASIK surgery must fulfill the conditions mentioned in the official website.

  1. Candidates who have failed the Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT) or Flight Cadet suspended from flying training at Air Force Academy will not be eligible.

Technical Branch

  1. Age:Candidates must be between the age of 20-24 years as on 1 January, 2018

  2. Educational Qualifications:

    i) Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics) {AE (L)} and Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical) {AE (M)} - candidates applying for this branch must have a four year degree qualification from a recognized University or cleared Sections A and B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India by actual studies. Candidates must also have at least 60% marks in aggregate with minimum eight of the eighteen specified subjects mentioned in the website.

  3. Physical Standards:

i) Height and weight- minimum height must be 157.5cms with correlative weight for men and 152cms for women.
ii) All other medical criteria will be evaluated by the Air Force Medical authorities whose decision will be final.

Ground Duty Branches


Candidates must be between the age of 20-24 years as on 1 January, 2018

Educational Qualifications

i) Administration and Logistics- Graduate in any discipline with 60% marks in aggregate or post-graduate in any discipline with 50% marks in aggregate

ii) Accounts- Graduate degree in commerce with minimum 60% marks in aggregate or post graduate with 50% marks in aggregate.

iii) Education- Post Graduate degree in any discipline with minimum 50% marks in aggregate

Physical standards

Minimum height requirement for men is 157.5cms and 152 cms for women with correlated weight. Other medical criteria will be decided by the Air Force Medical authorities.

Exam Pattern and Syllabus

The duration of the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT 2014) is two hours during which the candidates must answer multiple choice questions on:

i) Verbal ability
ii) Numerical ability
iii) Reasoning
iv) General awareness
v) Military aptitude

Application Procedure and Selection

  1. Applications have to be submitted by the date mentioned on the official website-www.careerairforce. nic. in
  2. Details of matriculation and other educational qualifications along with a recent passport size photograph saved in the computer will be necessary for filling up the application.
  3. Candidates have to carry a photo identity proof on the day of the examination as well as at the SSB interview.
  4. Candidates who are shortlisted on the basis of the AFCAT testing will be called for further testing at one of the Air Force Selection Boards (AFSBs) at Dehradun, Mysore, Gandhinagar or Varanasi. The testing will comprise of three stages-

i) Stage I- Test consists of Intelligence Test and is a screening test. Those who do not qualify will not go on to the next stage.

ii) Stage II- testing consists of Psychology test, group tests and interview over a span of four days

iii) For Flying Branch: Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT) will be administered.

  1. Change of SSB interview should not be avoided. But in case of unforeseen circumstances the change of interview date is possible.
  2. Medical Examination will be conducted by AFCM, New Delhi or IAM, Bengaluru.
  3. Those passing all the stages will be eligible for the training after which they will be placed according to the vacancies.

Pay and Allowances

Flying officers will be entitled a pay in Pay Band of Rs.15,600 to Rs.39,100 apart from this they will be entitled to Grade Pay, Military Service Pay, Dearness Allowance, Maintenance Allowance, Transport allowance apart from Flying allowance, Technical allowance, Field Area Allowance, Special Compensatory Allowance, Special Force Allowance, Siachen Allowance, Island Special Duty allowance, Test Pilot and Flight Test Engineer allowance, Hard Area Allowance and Remote Locality Allowance. On successfully completing the training, the candidates will be entitled to gross monthly emoluments as follows-

i) Flying Branch: Rs.69,130
ii) Technical Branch: Rs.60,380
iii) Ground Duty Branches: Rs.57,880
