Special Class Railway Apprentices' (SCRA) Exam 2013


Special Class Railway Apprentices' (SCRA) Exam 2013 will be held across India in 42 cities on 20 January 2013. The test is a written exam for appointment in the Mechanical Department of Indian Railways as a special class apprentice. Approximately 42 vacancies are available, and are planned to be filled in part based on exam results.

Results will be announced in March or April of 2013. Candidates should keep necessary documents ready to submit to the Commission upon announcement of the written part of the exam.

SCRA 2013 Eligibility Criteria

In order to take the exam, you must have passed the Intermediate or equivalent in the first or second division with math and physics and/or chemistry as exam subjects. You are also eligible if you have passed the Higher Secondary Examination in the 10+2 system with the exam subjects of math and physics and/or chemistry. Check with the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) website for further details on eligibility.

Candidates should also be physically fit in accordance with physical standards for admission.

SCRA 2013 Exam Pattern

The test consists of two parts, a written examination and a personality test. The written exam only takes place on 20 January 2013.

Part I

The written exam has three parts, each of is allocated two hour to completes.

Part II

The Personality Test has a maximum of 200 marks. You must qualify with the results of the written exam to take the Interview/Personality Test. This test takes place after announcement of the written exam results in March or April of 2013.

Types of Questions and Marking Scheme

Questions on the test are objective (multiple choice answer) questions in English. For wrong answers receive a negative marking. One-third of the marks assigned to a question are deducted for an incorrect answer. For questions left blank, no penalty is given. Guessing may not be advantageous, as you will be marked down for any wrong answers. Calculators are not permitted in the test centre.

The sections of Paper-I are English, General Knowledge, and a Psychological Test. Paper-II is on physical sciences, including Physics and Chemistry (Physical, Inorganic and Organic). Paper-III is the Mathematics section, with the topics Algebra, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus and Differential Equations, Vectors and Statistics.

Those going on to the Personality Test will interviewed by a Board. Questions will span academic and extramural topics and matters of general interest. The objective of the Personality Test is to assess the candidate's initiative, leadership and other qualities.

Admit Card

The e-Admit Card for the SCRA exam is available on the UPSC website for downloading. The e-Admission Certificate is available online three weeks before the exam.

SCRA 2013 Application Process

If you are interested in applying to take the test, you must apply online. The application is only available online through the UPSC website. You can fill in your Online Application Form and pay the required fee. The fee for candidates is Rs. 100/- (payment is exempted for female/Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/Physically Handicapped candidates). The fee may be deposited in cash at any SBI branch.
