Institute of Economic Growth - Introduction

With a focus on economics demography and sociology The Institute of Economic Growth – IEG was established by Prof. V.K.R.V. Rao, a pioneer in economics, in 1958. The institute is recognized as one of the leading research institute in the areas of economics and social development.

Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru as the first president and Prof. Rao as the institute’s first director had a vision behind the establishment.

The institute currently has focus on nine broad areas of study. These are as

    • Agriculture and rural development
    • Environment and resource economics
    • Globalisation and trade, industry
    • Labour and welfare
    • Macro economic issues and models
    • Population and health policy
    • Social change and social structure

To augument quality research activity in the earmarked thrust areas the institute has specialized unit towards this end. These research units/centers work in different areas of economics and social economics. The research unit of IEG comprises of:

    • Agricultural Economics Research Unit
    • Development Planning Centre
    • Environmental & Resource Economics Unit
    • Health Policy Research Unit
    • Indian Economic Service Training Section (IES)
    • Population Research Centre
    • Applied Econometrics Research Section or RBI Chair Unit
    • Social Change and Social Structure or Sociology Unit
    • V.K.R.V. Rao Centre for Studies in Globalisation – Institute Of Economic Growth
    • Each research unit has definite task to perform in its relevant discipline.
