Best Computer Engineering Courses: Career, Scope, Colleges & Salary In 2023

Computer Engineering (or Computer Science Engineering) is a branch of engineering which studies parts of electrical engineering and computer science and applies it to the making and development of computers and computer-based systems.

Computer engineers build computers such as PCs, workstations, and supercomputers. They also build computer-based systems such as those found in cars, planes, appliances, electronics, phones, communication networks, and many other products. Computer engineers design not only the hardware, but also the software in computer-based systems.

Computer engineers also work to carry out research on robotics, which relies heavily on using digital systems to control and monitor electrical systems like motors, communications, and sensors.

With the basic skills in Physics and Maths, a career in computer science engineering is rewarding yet challenging. Recently, computer science and engineering has become one of the most sought after and lucrative career option for engineering aspirants owing to the excellent employment opportunities in both hardware and software industries.

Eligibility Criteria

An educational career in computer engineering can begin after class 10th. The individual is eligible to pursue only Diploma program in computer engineering. After successful completion of the course, they can join as a junior engineer in various public and private sector companies.

  • BE/BTech in Computer Engineering requires 10+2 in Science with Physics, Chemistry and Maths.
  • The selection is done on the basis of entrance tests (e.g. IITJEE, AIEEE, BITSAT etc.) conducted at national and state level.
  • ME/MTech programs can be pursued with a GATE qualification.
  • Those who are interested in studying further can join the PhD programs offered by various universities and technological institutions across the country.

Career and Job Prospects

Computer Engineers have a variety of options to choose from as a career. They can venture into academia, research, government, private, business organizations, etc.

They are involved in analyzing problems for solutions, formulating and testing, using advanced communications or multi-media equipment, or working in teams for product development.

The software and IT companies are the major employers of computer engineering graduates. They offer the best packages to the young graduates which are unmatched with other branches of the engineering profession. Universities like SRM offer B.Tech programs specifically in Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Big Data etc., which have a huge market currently. SRM has its own entrance, SRMJEE, for applications to its B.Tech courses.

Salary Package

Work experience, qualifications, performance are important factors in determining the salary level of Computer Engineers. In India, a fresh graduate from an average engineering college can expect starting monthly salary anywhere from Rs.10, 000 – Rs.25, 000.

With 1-2 years of industrial experience, the salary may go up to Rs. 50, 000 per month and more. Freshers from elite technological universities/colleges (IITs and NITs) are offered annual pay package of up to 10 lakh Indian Rupees.
