Accreditation of Engineering Institutes - Importance & Benefits

What is Accreditation?

Educational accreditation is the evaluation of an educational institution or program by an independent body of professionals Accreditation helps ensure that regardless of the institution or department’s mission, the academic offerings meet standards set by the accrediting body.

Importance of Accreditation

Accreditation is a process in which certification of competency, authority, or credibility is presented. It provides quality assurance, giving credit where it is due for some clearly visible and demonstrable strategies of academic activities and objectives of the institutions, known to be honestly pursued and efficiently achieved by the resources currently available with a potential for continuous improvement in quality for effective growth.

Benefits of accreditation

  • Quality Education: The quality of education in accredited institutes is much better than unaccredited institutes. It helps meet local, state, national, and appropriate international requirements. You can’t opt for PhD or any research work if the institution is not accredited.

  • Financial aid opportunities: Students are only able to obtain financial assistance if the institution they are attending has got the accreditation from government recognized bodies such as AICTE, NBA.

  • Job Options: Most employers prefer to hire job applicants who have gained their education from accredited college or university.

NBA

National Board of Accreditation (NBA), the only authorized accreditation body in the country to undertake accreditation of technical education programs was establishment in September 1994 by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), a statutory body of the Government of India. NBA has evolved and established a 3-step process for assessment and accreditation of programs at Diploma/Undergraduate/Postgraduate levels in various programs in Engineering & Technology, Management, Pharmacy and Hotel Management and Catering Technology.

Accreditation Checklist

  • Check Web sites, course catalogs and the admission office to learn about an institution’s accreditation. Do the same for programs in which you’re interested.
  • Be sure the accrediting body is recognized by the AICTE.
  • Visit accrediting organizations’ Web sites. They usually list their standards for accreditation.
  • Consider what you want to do with your degree. If you want to be able to apply for more formal education later, check to see if subsequent programs demand a particular accreditation.
  • If you’re planning to be licensed in your profession, be sure to check on what kind of accreditation may be required.
  • If you’re getting reimbursed through work, check with the HR department to learn about any restrictions based on the accreditation status of the institution and programs you want to attend.
