centa_tpo_teachers_olympiad_logo_2016Apart from our parents, it is our teachers who have always been a constant source of motivation for us to never give up on striving for excellence. More often than not, our teachers don't get a platform to improve or showcase their capabilities, mostly due to lack of initiatives that ideally should be taken on a national level.

It is to address this gap that the Centre for Teacher Accreditation (CENTA) launched the first edition of the  Teaching Professionals' Olympiad (TPO) last year in 2015 - a first-of-its-kind national competition to reward, recognize and celebrate teachers. The 2nd edition, TPO 2016 will be conducted in 22 cities across India to ensure that the maximum number of teachers and schools can participate. Scheduled on 3 December, 2016, this annual competition aims to spot the best teachers from all over India.

More about the Olympiad format

Teachers will have 11 Subject Tracks to choose from, across primary, middle and high school segments, including for the first time, one track in Hindi medium. All tracks will have a considerable amount of focus on ‘classroom practice’, that checks for innovative situation-response through objective questions' format. This year, there will be two additional TPO Challenger tracks in the middle school segment - an in-depth test of subject expertise as well as classroom practice in the context of the particular subject. Aiming to identify ‘master teachers’ TPO Challenger is meant for teachers who are passionate about their respective subjects and keen to go deep into teaching methods in the subject.

The registration for TPO 2016 has started and teachers from more than 25 states & 200 cities and towns have already signed up to appear for this test.

"The CENTA Teaching Professionals’ Olympiad aims to reward, recognize and celebrate teachers and the teaching profession; we were thrilled by the enormous positive response to the very first edition last year by both the teachers and schools. It was amazing to see over 5000 registrations and even more amazing to see teachers travelling long distances, from almost 300 cities, towns and villages to the TPO centres to participate in this competition. The teachers were ready to take the test and keen to ace it!" said Ramya Venkataraman, Co-Founder and CEO of CENTA.

The feedback survey conducted last year threw up some interesting insights. Some of them are as follows:

  • 93% of the participating teachers felt that TPO should be held regularly.

  • 88% participants saw TPO to be an opportunity to know where they stood and to improve their skills.

  • More than 60% teachers said the questions were very relevant to the kind of situations faced by them in class.
