AICTE says 3 internships mandatory for engineering students

Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said at the Lok Sabha that it will now be mandatory for engineering students across the country to undergo three internships in the duration of their 4 year degree course. He further added that these three internships must span between four to eight weeks and the institutes have to help the students to find a suitable industry for the internship.Professors of engineering courses also need to appear for an annual refresher course through SWAYAM portal (Massive open online course).

According to AICTE, only 6.96 lakh students out of 15.87 lakh students at 10,328 technical institutions get jobs through placements.Lack of required skills among graduates have been pointed out as the reason for the low employability levels.Only 40% of engineering graduates got placed after graduating from college. The HRD Minister said their targetting to increase the placement to 60% at least.
