Free coaching by IIT teachers for Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) aspirants. Does it sound too good to be true? However, it is in fact true.

Under the Swayam Prabha channels, an IIT - Professor Assisted Learning (IIT-PAL) was launched by the HRD ministry. Internet and/or DTH setup (TV) is all that is needed for a JEE aspirant to access these lectures. The lectures will be conducted on Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology and all of them can be accessed from home.

The IIT-PAL project in-charge is IIT - Delhi with IIT - Bombay, IIT - Chennai, IIT - Kanpur, IIT - Kharagpur, and IIT - Guwahati as partners. The students can consult with the teachers through phone and email.

IIT - Delhi has over 600 hours of video content available on YouTube and via Satellite TV. Currently all the lectures are conducted in English however there are plans to expand these in Hindi and other regional languages.

A DTH channel is assigned to each subject which is broadcast for a total of 4 hours, i.e. 2 hours for Class XI and 2 hours for Class XII. The broadcast is scheduled six times in a day so the student can access it as per their convenience. Recorded lectures are part of coaching at the moment however introduction of downloadable e-learning material and 'doubt clearing' sessions will be done soon.

V Ramgopal Rao, Director - IIT Delhi said, "This is a great initiative to help senior secondary students. Not everyone can afford coaching classes. We need to help children from the rural backgrounds and from disadvantaged sections to enter the IITs. We are hoping that this will help facilitate entry of such children. There are bright children in every corner of the country and they can use IIT PAL and provide us their feedback. We will keep improving on the content."

Professor Ravi Soni, National Coordinator of IIT PAL, said, "The main objective of the initiative is to assist the students of Class XI and XII who are IIT aspirants. The lectures that are delivered by experts in the specific subjects will help the students understand basic concepts in a very simple way. It will also help the socially and the economically backward students prepare for the IIT exam."
