One Crore Books to go Obsolete in NCERT Text Update
In the first major updation of NCERT text books in seven year, for the academic session 2018-19, almost one crore books still unsold are going to become obsolete, according to sources from NCERT, as per a TOI report.
The same source was quoted as saying that books worth Rs 25-30 crores are all set to become useless in the new academic session. The final count of books and the final value of the same will be known only once NCERT receives data on the number of unsold books sent to places and dealers across the country.
Just last year, NCERT had commissioned a print run of 4.6 crore textbooks to be used across the country. The books that are to become outdated are all unsold books from this print run. In 2013, it was decided that textbook data would be updated annually. It was also decided to keep a cushion while ordering new editions to prevent scarcity of books but this year this cushion was unusually high resulting in the large number of outdated books.
NCERT, in 2016, started taking online orders from schools and individuals. This year, the council has commissioned a print run of 5.6 crore textbooks which will be available by March-end, April first week, in time for the new school year.
