The National Institute of Technology, Karnataka (NIT, Karnataka) was established in 1960 at Surathkal as Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC).Since its establishment the college strives to be leader in the fields of engineering and technology training.

The government of India recognized NIT, Karnataka situated in Dakshina Kannada (DK) region as institute of excellence and bestowed with “Deemed University�? status.The college renamed as National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NIT, Karnataka) by the Government.

The campus of NIT is famously known as “SRINIVASNAGAR” after Honourable Ullal Srinivasa Mallya.Mr. Ullal is the architect and master planner of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district and a true politician.He was also involved with Freedom Struggle Movement, led by Gandhi ji.

The NIT Karnataka stands high in rankings among other national level institutes of similar capacity.In the past, more than 80% of its graduates find placement opportunity with reputed national and international agencies.

Facilities include Central Computer Centre, a library with open access system, digital library, reprographic service and multimedia service. There is a dedicated center fpr clay roofing tiles and for bricks and other ceramic products. The NITK has eleven hostel blocks in all. There are six hostel blocks for the under-graduate boys, two for post-graduates and three for girls.
