National Institute of Technology Srinagar - Introduction


The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar is situated near the famous Hazratbal shrine in Srinagar. It is close to Dal Lake which is major tourist attraction of Kashmir. The institute was started in 1960 under government’s first 5 year plan as Regional Engineering College (REC), Srinagar.

Further as NIT bill came into existence, the government has decided to bestow REC, Srinagar with “Deemed University�? status and also renaming it as National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar with an agreement from two statuary educational bodies of the country- University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The NIT Srinagar offers courses at Under Graduate and Post Graduate level in Engineering Sciences, allied disciplines and other allied disciplines. As a “Deemed University�? the institute awards its own degrees in various teaching disciplines.

Besides offering courses the NIT Hazratbal also offers consultancy services to government and private corporate. At present there are 3 boys hostels and 14 girls residential quarters. The student placement record at NIT Srinagar is very good. Companies like TCS, Wipro, MECON, HPCL, ABB and DRDO have recruited engineering students from NIT Srinagar.
