National Means Cum Merit Scholarship Scheme

NMMS Scholarship

The centrally sponsored National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMS) offers scholarships on a quarterly basis to students studying as regular students in class IX in government, local body and government-aided schools. The scholarships will be paid from class IX till class XII for a maximum period of four years.

National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMS)

  • Under this program 100,000 scholarships are given to talented students whose parental annual income is not over Rs.1,50,000 from all sources
  • Each state and union territory has its individual quota and the scholarships from each region are based on the population of students in the specified age group in the area, however, the total number that may be allowed in one region is specified already by the central government
  • The scholarships are awarded on a quarterly basis to students for the maximum duration of four years
  • The NMMS scholarship is valued at Rs. 6,000 per annum.

Eligibility Criteria

If you are awarded the scholarship, you must:

  • Study in approved courses
  • Maintain good conduct as certified by the head of your college/institution and continue studies in government, local body or government-aided schools as a regular student
  • Not leave classes without proper leave application
  • Take up study on a full-time basis
  • Not take up any job

Other criteria includes the following:

  1. Scholarships are not for studying abroad
  2. Nothing can be claimed after 12 months of expiry of the academic session
  3. No scholarship will be given if you discontinue studies within one month of admission
  4. In case you are unable to attend the annual examination due to serious illness, you must provide a proper medical certificate to the head of the institution from a registered medical practitioner
  5. In case of any gap in academic sessions, the scholarship will be discontinued
  6. For secondary and higher secondary stage, awardees must get a clear promotion from class VII to class IX for being eligible for the award.
  7. For secondary and higher secondary stage, awardees must get a minimum of 55 percent marks (relaxed by 5 percent for SC/ST) in the final examination of class IX and 60 percent in the final examination of class X
  8. The scholarship amount will be given to the students from selective SBI branches

Application procedure

Applications are to be downloaded from the official website and duly filled in applications must be submitted by 16 September 2016, with the required documents.

Exam pattern

Each state or union territory will conduct its own test for selection of students for awarding the NMMS.

  1. Selection will be done strictly on the basis of the state level examination
  2. Students have to answer two tests – Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
  3. MAT and SAT will have 90 multiple choice questions each, each is held for a duration of 90 minutes
  4. The syllabus is pertaining to the syllabus of subjects taught in classes VII and VIII
